Hartman Woods is a beautiful 16 acre forested property on Cole Road featuring a diverse deciduous forest, multiple ravines, a permanent stream lined with mossy boulders, sandstone outcroppings, and a rich riparian forest along a 200 yard stretch of the Clear Fork River.
Nearly 3/4-mile of the Clear Fork Valley Scenic Trail (a rustic, back-country hiking trail open to foot travel only) passes through the property, including a challenging 170 foot elevation gain from the river up to the cliff-line above. Vantage points along the cliff-line offer hikers impressive 180-degree vistas looking up and down the river valley.
In June of 2022, an EF1 tornado passed directly through Hartman Woods, snapping and uprooting many dozens of trees. Except for the clearing necessary to reopen trails, all of the fallen timber has been left intact as nature sculpted it, creating abundant cover for wildlife and offering visitors a unique opportunity to observe up close the ecological changes within a forest as it recovers following a severe storm.
NOTE: There are no parking facilities on this property - hikers must access it on foot by parking at the Newville Bridge on Pleasant Hill Road (watch for the Clear Fork Valley Scenic Trail kiosk), walking 1/4-mile along Pleasant Hill Road then 1/4-mile along Cole Road to the well-marked trail head on the right. Parking along the side of Cole Road is strictly prohibited. Hikers visiting Hemlock Falls approximately 1 mile to the south can also access Hartman Woods by following the Clear Fork Valley Scenic Trail northward.
